CUPERTINO, CA – Apple today announced the iPhone 17e, a new, lower-priced smartphone starting at $599. The launch, which took place on Monday, expands the company’s iPhone lineup and appears to be a strategic move to boost product sales and drive adoption of its new AI features amidst a competitive tech landscape. The new device will be available starting March 11.
The iPhone 17e serves as a more accessible version of the flagship iPhone 17. While it features the same powerful processor, it has a slightly smaller screen, a single rear camera instead of the dual-camera system, and omits the Dynamic Island interface. This release follows last year’s iPhone 16e, suggesting a new annual cadence for Apple’s budget-friendly models, a departure from the more infrequent updates to its previous SE line.
This strategy may indicate strong consumer demand for more affordable options, especially after the iPhone 16e’s positive reception. Strong iPhone sales have been crucial for Apple, helping to ease investor concerns about the company’s position in the artificial intelligence race. The tech giant surpassed revenue expectations in the final quarter of 2025, a success largely attributed to the iPhone 17 lineup. During an earnings call in January, Apple CEO Tim Cook noted, “The demand for iPhone was simply staggering,” highlighting record upgrades and significant growth in users switching from Android devices.
Priced $200 below the standard iPhone 17, the new model could be key to bringing Apple Intelligence to a broader audience. Many of Apple’s advanced AI features require newer hardware, making the iPhone 17e an attractive upgrade for users with older phones that lack support. The device will be offered in black, white, and pink, and includes more storage than its predecessor. It also contains a new, faster cellular modem, which Apple claims is twice as fast as the one in the iPhone 16e.
However, the launch arrives during a challenging period for the smartphone market, which is grappling with a memory shortage driven by the demands of AI technology. According to the International Data Corporation, the global smartphone market is projected to see a decline in the first quarter of this year.
The iPhone 17e marks the beginning of what is expected to be a major year for Apple. A significantly revamped, AI-powered version of Siri, utilizing Google’s Gemini model, is anticipated to be released later this year. Furthermore, reports from Bloomberg suggest that Apple’s first foldable iPhone could also make its debut in 2026. Alongside the new iPhone, Apple also announced a new version of the iPad Air on Monday.
