In a recent policy update, Google has modified the behavior of Google Assistant on all compatible headphones. Previously, activating Assistant through these devices would prompt an automatic readout of unread notifications. Now, users must explicitly say, “Hey Google, read my notifications,” to hear them. This change, which began with Pixel Buds in September 2024, has now been extended to all Google Assistant-connected headphones.
While Google hasn’t provided an official reason for this adjustment, it’s likely aimed at enhancing user privacy. Automatic notification readouts could inadvertently disclose sensitive information in public settings. Requiring a voice command ensures that notifications are shared only when and where the user chooses.
This update may reduce convenience for some users accustomed to hands-free updates, as they will now need to remember to request notifications verbally. However, it offers greater control over personal information, aligning with modern privacy standards.
