Google has quietly removed the banana emoji from Gemini’s image generation button, and users were quick to notice the change. A Reddit discussion in r/GeminiAI titled “They removed the 🍌 from the Nano-Banana” started gaining attention after people spotted that the familiar shortcut had been replaced with a more standard image-style icon.
While the tweak might seem minor, it sparked a surprisingly lively conversation among Gemini users. For some, the banana emoji had become a quirky but recognizable part of the Nano Banana feature. Others, however, said the icon had always been confusing and didn’t clearly represent what the button actually did—especially for users simply trying to generate an image.
Interestingly, Google’s official documentation hasn’t fully caught up with the interface change yet. On the company’s image generation page for Gemini, Google still instructs users to select “🍌Create images” from the tools menu. This suggests that while the emoji may be disappearing from the interface, the branding still exists in parts of the official documentation.
Reactions across the Reddit thread were mixed. Some users felt the new icon looks generic and lacks personality, while others said the banana never made much sense unless you already knew that Nano Banana was the name associated with Gemini’s image generation model.
Beyond the emoji change, there’s also a broader product update happening behind the scenes. Google recently launched Nano Banana 2, introduced as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image. According to the announcement, this updated model is expected to become the default image generation system across the Gemini app, with improvements focused on faster editing and higher-quality image creation.
Because of this shift, the disappearing banana emoji may be part of a larger effort to simplify Gemini’s interface and reduce some of the quirky branding as its AI tools become more widely used and integrated into the broader product ecosystem.
There’s also a precedent for this change. In December, 9to5Google reported that Google removed the banana emoji from the Remix button in the Google Messages beta, replacing it with a more conventional icon. With that in mind, Gemini losing its banana doesn’t look like a one-off adjustment.
For long-time Gemini users, the banana emoji was a small but memorable detail that gave the feature some personality. For new users, though, Google may have decided that a simple “Create images” button works better when it looks exactly like what it’s meant to do.
